PF,
Wonder no more..Its very elitist  and WRONG to think that poor children can work while our children go to school and lead a happy childhood. The state and the civil society both have a goddamned responsibility to every child born in this country. The states responsibilty to ensure that children are well fed  in school and learning and civil societys responsibility is to make sure that the state is doing its job.Wonder no longer my friend.Get down to constructive action. The debate has to become mainstream political issue and it cannot by educated people wondering the way you seem to be.

Copying my comment on smitas blog here.
Loved the way you have highlighted the plight
My ngo has had a fair amount of success in this direction. In fact we have actually found a genuine ally in R.R.Patil the home minister who is taking personal interest. We have managed to clear Dharavi of child labor in zari factories, and we regularly monitor the area. The bigger challenge now is that when we send the kids back to their homes, parents dont know what to do with them.We have therefore started residential centres in Sitamarhi in Bihar for the children so that they are not sent back. The problem is complex.Poor parents in backwrd areas of bihar/orissa/rajasthan dont see a future for their kids in their states and therefore are willing believers when middlemen from mumbai representig the zari industry come and promise apprenticeship (hunnat). The other tragedy is that quite afew of the zari shops are run by former child labor.
The ultimate solution is quality education and employment opportunities in their home states and that means inclusive growth. We have a long wy to go, but we will get their.

Hmpfffffffffffffffff...........MSEB, yes I know how it works alright.
Thnx for persisiting and posting yr comment and appreciation.
The conditions are appalling.......no human or animal should work like that........and making them work at that very young age stunts them or affects their eyes for life. I am told they are often not paid and only given soem food and made to sleep also in the work place and so on. Teaching them a trade is one thing but slave driving them is another matter all together.

Hey Lakshmi,

Wanted to post a comment earlier...but ya know how MSEB works

I loved the symbolism that you've used through the word 'stain'

Child labor...child sexual abuse...is indeed a *stain* on our collective psyche

But  I often wonder...isn't it better that these kids work...earn money the honest way...instead of indulging in petty crimes...they are vulnerable...

Of course, the working conditions need a sea change...they need to be paid in a fair manner...and education be made available...

I lurrved the way you've weaved the fabric of your story...painstaikingly...the embellished outcome...is awesome

Hello Lakshmi, I hope I dont own any such clothes made by such children. Not that I own any expensive designer stuff from these exotic boutiques.  My heart breaks for such children caught in such misery

  mayaonline posted 2 mnths ago

Ah, that was quite disturbing... many a times many of us might also end up doing stuff like that. sigh. This was written well and the build up was gud too.
